El Centro Cultural M100 ha experimentado con los diversos lenguajes tanto artísticos como
teatrales, específicamente el área de artes visuales está desarrollando líneas que investigan la
Cultura Visual abriéndose a pensar diversos modos de comprender no solo el “arte” dentro de
galerías y museos, sino también la creación que se encuentra en las casas, barrios y calles. Este
último elemento nos parece sumamente interesante, consideramos incluir y presentar prácticas
visuales que también dialogan con las artes, invitando a uno de los grafiteros más importantes de
la escena chilena y extranjera.
M100 trae a Chile junto con el proyecto Redesearte al grafitero Cekis, gracias al auspicio de
MARSON Street Art, Polincay y Metro. El desarrollo de su trabajo puede detectarse a finales de los
ochenta en Chile, con la apertura a la democracia las calles comenzaron a teñirse de diseños que
dialogaban tanto con el muralismo como con las tendencias foráneas, su vínculo generó en CEKIS
un nuevo lenguaje que en los noventas marcó la escena local. Ya a principios del 2000 viajó a
Nueva York para insertarse en el mundo artístico y visual de la ciudad, creando murales en
Queens, Brooklyn y Manhattan. Esta invitación se plantea como un retorno de una de las figuras
más relevantes y consideramos interesante que presente las transformaciones que ha sufrido su
obra a través de la experiencia de su viaje, en dialogo con las transformaciones que también son
visibles en la ciudad de Santiago.
CEKIS nos visita para realizar el día 5 de julio a las 19:00 horas una conferencia magistral en
M100 en donde hablará y presentará un recorrido por su obra, esta actividad es completamente
gratuita y abierta a todo público, las inscripciones deben ser enviadas a
recepcionm100@gmail.com con su nombre, apellido y teléfono de contacto.
Posteriormente CEKIS pintará, durante 10 días, un gran mural en la estación metro Quinta Normal,
creando una nueva visualidad producto de las transformaciones mencionadas anteriormente.

A couple months ago a I met Natalia Moena, a Chilean girl from NY who had the great idea to produce an event to raise money for the victims of the Earthquake happened in Chile last winter. She's been working on it with no stop putting all this event together

Estuve en Bruselas despues de casi 10 anios donde pude reencontrarme con amigos, disfrutar algo la ciudad y ademas donde pude pintar una camioneta de un chilescote amigo.

Last week I received a copy of the new book "Mural Art vol.2" where I had the pleasure to be on it. It was a surprice to see other chileans in the book, like my friends "Agotok"and "Inti", and also the legendary "Mono Gonzalez" (founder of BRP).I want to thank Kiriakos Losifidis for the invite to be on the book and CERN for the hook-up. The only thing I missed (very important), it was a non given credit for my friend GRIN who did the mural in Sao Paulo with me (I don't know what happened).
La semana pasada recivi una copia del libro "Mural Art vol.2" donde tengo el placer de aparecer. Fue una grata sorpresa poder ver otros chilenos en el libro como mis amigos "Agotok" e "Inti", y ademas del legendario "Mono Gonzalez"(fundador de la Brigada Ramona Parra).Quiero agradecer a Kiriakos Losifidis por la invitacion de estar en el libro y a CERN por la recomendacion. Lo unico que falto en el libro donde esta mi parte fue poner los creditos a mi amigo GRIN por el mural que hicimos en Sao Paulo, no se que paso exactamente.

"estrellas de la esquina"

Este documental sobre un grupo de jovenes "Breakers" de la comuna de renca, fue mostrado por primera vez en TVN creo que como el ano 90 y tiene una belleza especial ya que capta esa realidad del Chile en los anos 80s (bajo dictadura) y como esta cultura hip hop importada, pero al mismo tiempo milenaria y universal (para mi) podia motivar con tanata fuerza a la gente que no tenia nada.
La parte que muestran Bombero Ossa me renueva mis recuerdos que me quedan de ese lugar. Ya que tuve la suerte de poder haber ido un sabado de mi vida alla, junto a mi amigo del alma y ver como estos 'locos' bailaban y practicaban a finales de la decada dorada de los 80's (nosotros teniamos 12 o 13 anos de edad entonces).
Lo increible fue, que el tiempo me llevo a poder conocer a muchos de los personajes de la pelicula 10 anos despues y compartir viajes, experiencias y muchas anecdotas.

In 2004, a couple months after I'd moved to NYC, I had the pleasure to be at the relaunch of Bruce Davidson's book "Subway" (originally released in 1986). By that time I didn't know anything about him, actually I had seen one of his pictures before, but I didn't know it was him who took it (on the Mass Appeal cover circa 99') , but his Street work caused such strong impact on me that I'll never forget I had the honor to meet him and get him signing my new "Subway bible".
Just recently I started looking on the web for old pictures from his work. This is some what I found and there's many more.

Yesterday, I watched a new documental about the financial crisis in USA called "AMERICAN CASINO".
It's was a lesson to me on how far this economic system of "free market" can get, to make quick profits. it was shocking to see how just a few group of people ("wall street vultures") can destroy the life of millions, by taking advantage of minorities, loaning dreams without any principle.
This film got deep into my feelings because it gives examples very related to my life right now in the States.
First, because in my own family is about to happen this tragedy (in Orlando,Florida). Second, it shows Baltimore city as one of the cities where the problem of Foreclosing has been so high in the last tree years, that since I started working there 2 years ago, the first thing I noticed when we were driving around, it was there were so many houses with no people living in it anymore. And Third, it also shows Stockton CA, where I also have so much to feel related to. I'm glad my family there doesn't have this problem, but it's still so incredible it could happen to anyone, anywhere.
I Don't like to be so negative thinking, but reality tells me not to be positive about any government future solution.

After I saw this movie I asked myself:
Why the bail out was to save the same people who create this SHIT?
Why The government didn't bail out or help the people who tried hard to pay their high bills on time, but they gave up?
It this a real free Society? (well in this last question, the response it was kinda obvious... it's not!)

This is why we celebrate today.
Even though, May Day is an official holiday in 66 countries and unofficially celebrated in many more, rarely is it recognized in the United States where it all began.

15 minutes of fame

Last year during my work at in one of the schools where I used to teach in The Bronx, a student approached to me asking if there were any of my artwork on the Internet to check it out. I told him, yes of course they are some on the web and he had just to google my graffiti name (cekis, zekis). For his surprise after he googled my name it appeared different works, some old ones and a few recent paints. Like a natural reaction he ask “you should be famous, right?” I said no and I know in Chile there are more people who know me because I’m from there, but here nobody really knows about my work or maybe just a few. We keep looking into the pictures and a few minutes after he asked me again, but this time more as an affirmation, “You must to be famous, right?” It was so much his interest to know if I was famous o not that it made me think how important is to be famous for young kids in this consumerist society like this one? I reminded later that I’d been asked the same by another student before in anther school.
It seems that to be famous in our times is the best thing that ever can happen to you, something that a lot of people yearn for and everyday it’s more infused into the youth and children.
Nowadays you can found in this sociaty from reality shows about totally uninteresting, unsignificant and untrascendental people to starving artists with such a hunger for success and attention that they are willing to sell their souls to be known, make some coins and therefore look as life winners.
It is like a famous pop artist said in the 60’s

“in the future everybody will want their 15 minutes of fame…”

which I ask myself;

El anio pasado cuando estaba trabajando en una de una escuela en El Bronx, un estudiante se acerco para preguntarme si existian algunos trabajos mios en internet para ver. Yo le dije que claro que habia que ir a google y buscar por mi nombre de escritor de graffiti (cekis o zekis). Lo cual para sorpresa de el despues de googlear mi nombre, aparecieron varios trabajos, algunos antiguos y otros mas nuevos. Como una reaccion natural vino una pregunta de el hacia mi, “tu debes ser famoso”. Yo le dije que no y que en chile habia mas gente que me conocia porque yo era de alla, pero que aqui nadie me conocia o muy poca gente. Seguimos viendo mas fotos y al rato me pregunto denuevo, esta vez mas como una afirmacion, “tu tienes que ser famoso?”. Era tal su interes por saber si yo era famoso que me puso a pensar , que tan importante es ser famoso dentro de una sociedad consumista como esta? Me acorde despues que en otra escuela una estudiante tambien me habia preguntado lo mismo antes.
Ser famoso en estos tiempos parece ser como lo mejor que te puede pasar en la vida, algo que mucha gente anhela y que esta cada vez mas arraigado dentro de los jovenes y ninos en este pais. Hoy en dia uno encuentra desde reality shows sobre gente totalmente no interesante, insignificante e intrascendente hasta artistas hambrientos de exito y atencion vendiendo su alma para ser conocidos y asi verse triunfadores en la vida.
Es como lo que decia un famoso artista Pop en los 60’s

“en el futuro todos van a querer tener sus 15 minutos de fama…”

I recently finished my residency at the LES printshop. This was a one year unique experience where I learned and developed new ways to work. At the same time it was an honor for me to be selected as a Keyholder in this great space and used it as much as I could.
The printshop was founded in 1968 in NY. Since then, it has been giving opportunities for emerging and established artist to show their work and gain experience.

Aqui hay algunas piezas hechas en colaboracion por Andy Warhol, Jean Michel Basquiat y Francesco Clemente a mediados de los 80's. Fue una sorpresa para mi saber que ellos trabajaron en conjunto para un proyecto en comun, revelandome que no solo los escritores de graffiti pueden producir obras como grupo.

Here are some of the collaboration pieces done by Andy Warhol, Jean Michel Basquiat and Francesco Clemente in the mid 80's.
It was a great surprise to know they worked on pieces together for a single project, revealing me that not only graffiti writers can produce unique artwork as a group.

One of the things I miss so much living in NY, it's the "freedom" that we have in Chile or in other "3rd world countries" to paint on the streets.
When you have almost everything to do a public piece (the supplies, the motivation and the time to go out) and you really want to do something positive for you or for your neighborhood, it is almost impossible to make it happen in NY without a permission letter from the owner of the wall. It seems it wouldn't be a problem to get it, but the reality have showed me the opposite and it has taught me that we don't really live in a tolerant society, where someone (like me) can find an abandoned place that is totally dirty and do a mural without getting arrested or having the chance to get in trouble with the law.
This makes a big difference between our styles and our ways to work in South America, and tells me that people in this city are scared for things they shouldn't.
Graffiti and Street art should not be criminalized as it is here right now, because there's other serious problems that really need to be fixed in this country.
Politics and People need to start to be open to new ideas and new ways of living and interact to each other...
...The following pictures show different paintings done with no permission at all in South America, without asking "if is it possible to paint here?..."

While I was in Chile, I visited Brazil for my second time in my life. I went with my friend "Grin" who invited me from Santiago to check out Sao Paulo city and our friends that we have in common there.
Here I'm posting some pictures from the trip.

Fells Point es un lugar historico dentro de la ciudad de Baltimore en el estado de Maryland. Este barrio tiene una singular historia ya que desde el siglo XVIII (cuando se fundo) ha venido cambiando su manera de subsistencia. Desde ser puerto y lugar donde se construyeron los barcos de guerra "constellation" y el "schooner", paso a ser lugar donde llegaron esclavos e inmigrantes europeos en el siglo XIX, hasta ser lo que es ahora, un punto de encuentro y vida nocturna. En este proceso nunca perdio su identidad como barrio/muelle, y su bonita arquitectura y gente lo hacen un lugar especial dentro de una extrana, pero interesante ciudad.

"Harbor Days". part 1

This wall is the site where I'm working right now and it's located in Fells Point, Baltimore. This wall is part of a series of murals that are beign painted in the city by different artists. This mural program is run by the Baltimore office of promotion and the arts (BOPA).
The idea for the wall was given by BOPA , and it consited to represent this historic neighborhood by its different periods of time and giving it also a futuristic view.

It took me one week and 15 gallons of paint to primer the wall with two coats by myself.
